SENATE HEALTH, EDUCATION & SOCIAL SERVICES COMMITTEE January 20, 1993 1:40 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT Senator Steve Rieger, Chairman Senator Bert Sharp, Vice-Chairman Senator Loren Leman Senator Mike Miller Senator Jim Duncan Senator Judy Salo MEMBERS ABSENT Senator Johnny Ellis COMMITTEE CALENDAR Organizational Committee Meeting ACTION NARRATIVE Tape 1-93, SIDE A Number 001 CHAIRMAN RIEGER called the Senate Health, Education, and Social Services (HESS) Committee meeting to order at 1:40 p.m. Chairman Rieger requested that a committee member make a motion to authorize the chairman to introduce legislation sponsored by the HESS Committee. SENATOR SHARP moved that the chairman be authorized to introduce legislation. Number 019 SENATOR DUNCAN questioned what the procedure would be. He asked if the chairman intends to review the proposed bills by the committee members to see if there are strong objections or resistance. CHAIRMAN RIEGER indicated that the process would be courteous and he would review the bills with the committee members whenever possible. Hearing no objection to Senator Sharp's motion, it was so ordered. Number 048 CHAIRMAN RIEGER indicated that there would be a Joint Senate HESS Finance meeting on January 28, 9:00 a.m., where the Association of Alaska School Board Officials would give an overview of how the foundation formula works. He also noted that the two nominees for the University Board of Regents have been referred to the committee. He indicated that he would like to hear from committee members as to whether there is an interest in having them appear before the committee. Chairman Rieger indicated that the Board of Regents is planning to be in Juneau and a hearing could be scheduled. Chairman Rieger also noted on January 29, the Board of Education asked to appear before the committee to give an overview of the "Alaska 2000" issues. Chairman Rieger discussed legislation and the process for scheduling bills in the committee. Number 125 SENATOR SALO asked how the Chairman how he plans to hear legislation that will be coming forward from the "Alaska 2000." Chairman Rieger said it is his initial impression that the "Alaska 2000" proposals would be handled issue by issue. He noted he envisions the same approach for health care issues. Number 135 Chairman Rieger adjourned the Senate HESS Committee meeting at 1:52 p.m.
